Of course, a “Best Of New Balance” list would never be complete without Joe Freshgoods. Herein lies the magic of everyone’s favorite minimalist brand. Taking on the 990v3 once more this past summer, JJJJound, the Montreal brand founded by creative Justin Saunders, dressed the popular New Balance silhouette in tonal browns and complemented the tan mesh-and-suede upper with hits of black on the “N” logo, overlays and outsole.Įschewing any unnecessary adornment and keeping co-branding elements minimal, JJJJound allowed the NB 990v3’s modern and streamlined silhouette to shine through. This definition allows scientists to develop of testable hypotheses about how creativity arises from the human brain. So, what exactly is creativity? While there are many components of creativity, including originality, pleasure, value, process, and imagination, the definition that scientists use to study creativity puts those components together to say that creativity is an ability to produce something that is both novel (or original) and has utility (is valuable to someone). Why do humans feel the need to be creative and enjoy creative material? While creativity is a basic part of human thinking, what counts as creativity and how do we measure it? The watchdog also complained about the price of Starbucks’ espresso in Italy, after the company opened two stores in Rome and Milan in 2018. This was in part thanks to the Italian government imposing a “Covid-19 tax” on widely-consumed products like coffee.Ĭodacons noted that in Rome, espressos had increased in price from €1.10 to €1.50, while they had reached as high as €2 in Milan. Italian consumer watchdog, Codacons, filed a complaint in May 2020, stating that espresso prices had become too high. Is There A Push To Raise The Price Of Espresso? All of this helps keep customer turnover high and beverage costs low, maximising bars’ profit margins. Furthermore, traditionally, Italians drink espresso in no more than three mouthfuls. Service times in Italy for an espresso are just over 30 seconds on average. Further along the supply chain, roasters earn €0.18 a cup, while producers make just €0.02 on average. In fact, coffee bars in Italy have incredibly high margins on espresso, making an average of €0.96 per serving. While this is a generalisation, it has meant that historically, some Italian roasters have been able to buy cheaper green coffee, allowing espresso bars to keep their prices low. The Italian affinity for darker roasts in espresso also means that it’s easier to hide defects and use lower-quality beans. The most expensive espresso can be found in the northern city of Bologna, where the average price is as €1.10. Bari has the lowest-priced espresso across all polled Italian cities, at €0.75. For instance, a ristretto is effectively the standard size of coffee shot in, say, Naples.”Įspressos are also generally cheaper in the south. “However, there is substantial regional variation, particularly from north to south. This usually means a basket of 14g being used to brew two 25ml shots. “The classic single Italian espresso shot is 7g in the basket, served as 25ml in the cup. Furthermore, Jonathan adds, espresso shots tend to be shorter in the south than they are in the north. Generally, as you go further south in Italy, coffee drinkers prefer darker and darker roasts for their espresso. In Italy, the resounding preference is for bold, intense, bitter coffee espresso bars often use dark roasts and sometimes even a blend of arabica and robusta for higher caffeine content. In Italian coffee culture, it’s not uncommon to drink several espressos throughout the course of the day. How Do Consumption Trends Affect The Price Of Espresso?Īpproximately 97% of Italian adults drink coffee every day. It effectively ensured that operators of more ‘modern’ business models, such as chains, were dissuaded from entering the market.” “This met with many proprietors’ approval in the post-war period. “Councils controlled the overall number of bars in operation, and imposed a schedule regulating the days on which each bar could open. Jonathan tells me that these price regulations were, and still are, beneficial for independent espresso bars. “Imposing a fixed price for coffee avoided one bar undercutting another,” he explains. He is also a member of the Consortium for the Safeguarding of Traditional Italian Espresso Coffee. He has published books including Coffee: A Global History. Professor Jonathan Morris is a Research Professor in History at the University of Hertfordshire. Many of them charged extra if the customer sat down to drink their espresso, rather than standing. Given these low prices, espresso bar operators sought to cut corners and save money in other places, including service. However, in 1911, Italian authorities enforced a maximum price for certain “necessities”, which included coffee. However, out-of-home coffee consumption was largely reserved for the upper classes in the early 1900s. This soon led to the emergence of “espresso bars” in Italy. Espresso has been a prevalent part of Italian culture since 1884, when Angelo Moriondo manufactured a machine that used steam to reduce the amount of time required to brew a cup of coffee.Įspresso machines started to become common in coffee shops throughout the early 20th century. Health and health care disparities are often viewed through the lens of race and ethnicity, but they occur across a broad range of dimensions. For example, disparities occur across socioeconomic status, age, geography, language, gender, disability status, citizenship status, and sexual identity and orientation. Moreover, racism negatively affects mental and physical health both directly and by creating inequities across the social determinants of health.įigure 1: Health Disparities are Driven by Social and Economic Inequities While there is currently no consensus in the research on the magnitude of the relative contributions of each of these factors to health, studies suggest that health behaviors and social and economic factors, often referred to as social determinants of health, are the primary drivers of health outcomes and that social and economic factors shape individuals’ health behaviors. Though health care is essential to health, research shows that health outcomes are driven by multiple factors, including underlying genetics, health behaviors, social and environmental factors, and access to health care. The CDC describes health equity as when everyone has the opportunity to be as healthy as possible.Ī broad array of factors within and beyond the health care system drive disparities in health and health care (Figure 1). Healthy People 2030 defines health equity as the attainment of the highest level of health for all people and notes that it requires valuing everyone equally with focused and ongoing societal efforts to address avoidable inequalities, historical and contemporary injustices, and health and health care disparities. Health equity generally refers to individuals achieving their highest level of health through the elimination of disparities in health and health care. Racism, which the CDC defines as the structures, policies, practices, and norms that assign value and determine opportunities based on the way people look or the color of their skin, results in conditions that unfairly advantage some and disadvantage others, placing people of color at greater risk for poor health outcomes. The terms “health inequality” and “inequity” are also sometimes used to describe unjust differences. ![]() The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines health disparities as, “preventable differences in the burden, disease, injury, violence, or in opportunities to achieve optimal health experienced by socially disadvantaged racial, ethnic, and other population groups and communities.” A health care disparity typically refers to differences between groups in health insurance coverage, affordability, access to and use of care, and quality of care. Healthy People 2030 defines a health disparity, as “a particular type of health difference that is linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage,” and that adversely affects groups of people who have systematically experienced greater obstacles to health. There are multiple definitions of health disparities. Health and health care disparities refer to differences in health and health care between groups that stem from broader inequities. What are health and health care disparities? This brief provides an introduction to what health and health care disparities are, why it is important to address disparities, what the status of disparities is today, recent federal actions to address disparities, and key issues related to addressing disparities looking ahead. Addressing health disparities is not only important from an equity standpoint, but also for improving the nation’s overall health and economic prosperity. ![]() Although growing efforts have focused recently on addressing disparities, the ending of some policies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, including continuous enrollment for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), may reverse progress and widen disparities. ![]() These disparities are not new and reflect longstanding structural and systemic inequities rooted in racism and discrimination. ![]() The COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide racial justice movement over the past several years have heightened the focus on health disparities and their underlying causes and contributed to the increased prioritization of health equity. The Soul’s load floor was also at just the right height: I didn’t have to stoop to get things, but nor will shorter folks likely be challenged by the height. And I don’t think it opens too high for those same folks to close the hatch. Kia executed the hatch pretty well by mounting the latch low, so it’s easier for shorter-statured people to reach and open the liftgate. If cargo-carrying is important to you, be sure to eye the Soul’s hatch before buying. How It Drives Interior Ergonomics & Electronics Cargo & Storage The Soul Exclaim has a few styling tweaks to separate it from a regular Soul, including red-accented body trim, a chrome grille surround, a unique tailgate badge and dual chrome twin-tip exhaust. Its proportions are good and the upright styling helps the Soul stand out in a crowd. The Kia Soul is boxy given its fairly high ride height, it could be mistaken for an SUV. They feature updated LED detailing and available Dynamic Bending Light technology, which angles the headlights to illuminate corners at night. The Forte5 ditches its thin version of Kia’s tiger nose grille for a larger version that now feeds directly into the reworked headlight clusters. Styling changes give the Forte and Forte5 the same nose this change represents only a slight tweak for the sedan, but for the hatchback it’s more drastic.
